education and poverty in suriname
Education: A Problem and Solution
The Problem According to the Ministry of Education and Community Development of Suriname education achievement is low. On a yearly basis about 20% of students fail their courses and the average drop-out rate for primary and secondary education is 7% and 25% respectively. The Reason These shocking numbers come from a number of internal issues: deficient curricula, lack of supervision, lack of cultural arts, poor selection mechanisms, unqualified teachers, and a failing organization. Unfortunately since the issue contains many causing factors the fix is neither quick nor easy. The Solution To improve the situation three things must be done

Poverty: A Problem and Solution
The Problem Being ranked 46 out of 135 in the Human Poverty Index Suriname has much to improve when it comes to national wealth. Since its independence in 1975 the country has had to borrow millions each year from different countries. In general neither the citizens nor the country is doing well financially. The Reason Suriname is only now discovering its valuable resources and beginning to utilize them. Unfortunately many of the resources are being harvested and sold to foreign companies rather than being used to build up Suriname's infrastructure. Furthermore, the government employees about 40% of the citizens in the country, causing it to spend the majority of its recurrent costs in labor. The Solution There is a possible solution to this lack of free trade in Suriname. It is possible that more individuals would be willing to open businesses if there was an incentive to do so. The government could give long term interest free loans to individuals that wish to open up a money generating business. Further incentive could be given by not requiring the business to pay taxes until it begins earning a certain yearly amount. This would promote a free market economy that could improve the economic situation. These loans would need to be approved in order to receive funding to prevent causing more economical damage than good. Businesses that utilize the countries resources such as mining, tourism, and oil will be the most successful. |
