Welcome to the Chase in Suriname website! This semester in our Developing World class we each received a country in which we were "adopted" into. This website has been created to tell you all about that country and how well it is developing. I will be focusing on the country of Suriname and how well it is accomplishing the Millennial Developmental Goals. Enjoy!

Suriname...Where is that?
Suriname is a small country
located on the North East Atlantic coast of South America. Being the smallest
sovereign country in South America it is only 64,000 square mile in area.
Suriname has a population around 566,000 people but its high tourism makes
Suriname rather crowded. Suriname is also fairly new having gained its
independence 1975 from the Dutch.

Important Events in Suriname: 2013
- March 13, 2013- After a successful visit by the vice president to Turkey Suriname sends its first ambassador to turkey, thus more fully developing a strong relationship with Turkey.
- April 16, 2013- Suriname establishes formal relations with the Republics of Kazakhstan and Moldova in an effort to increase in foreign investments and form new political ties. This is big for Suriname because both countries are rich in natural resources.
- April 29, 2013- Standard & Poor's Ratings Services (S&P) raised its outlook on Suriname’s economy from stable to positive, saying investments in the energy and mining sector could boost growth.
- July 4, 2013- President of Suriname, Desi Bouterse, swore in Ashwin Adhin as the new minister of education. The former minister, Shirley Sitaldin, was, according to Bouterse, fired for her “effort to depoliticize and bring efficiency to the ministry of education.”
- July 13, 2013- Suriname is chosen to be the host country for CARIFESTA, an international multicultural event organized periodically by the countries of the Caribbean. The main purpose is to gather artists, musicians, authors, and to exhibit the folkloric and artistic manifestations of the Caribbean and Latin American region.
- August 19, 2013- CARIFESTA begins in Suriname. Over thirty counties participated.
- October 10, 2013- President Desi Bouterse fires Suriname’s Finance Minister Adelien Wijnerman because of the slow pace at which contractors and other service providers to the government were being paid for their services
- Aug 30, 2013- Dino Bouterse, the son of President Desi Bouterse, was arrested on US drug charges. Dino was accused of trying to transport 10 kilograms of cocaine into the US along with possession of an antitank weapon.
- November 8, 2013- Dino Bouterse, son of President Desi Bouterse, is accused of aiding in a Lebanese terrorist organization called the Hezbollah. These charges are added to his former drug trafficking charges.
- December 18, 2013- A boundary dispute between Guyana and Suriname arises when Guyana approves a survey of land for rare earth metals on a 2 million hectare plot of land that both countries claim to be theirs.
