Two issues regarding women equality and child mortality IN Suriname
The Issue Regarding Women Equality
At first glance Suriname seems to be performing well in its efforts to improve women equality. Ever since the year 2000 the number of women in parliament as increased. However, the ratio of men to women in the countries policy making organizations is still largely favoring the men in a 4:1 ratio. Also a look at Suriname's primary education will show that there are equal number of boys to girls enrolled. At first glance things seem to be improving. However, it is largely unknown the state of women equality in income and employment opportunities. Because there is no data to show the inequality of women in the workforce there has been no government policy making on the subject. This leaves women subjected to discrimination when it comes to wages and employment opportunities. This is not to say that there haven't been attempts to collect data. A common issue is that for some reason people are reluctant to give their income or job related information on statistical surveys. This results in inconclusive results and thus no action towards rectifying a possible discrimination. The Solution Although no luck has been had trying to gather information from the population census, information on this topic can be gathered by other sources such as the Census of Industry. Currently on this census the question regarding income is for the total family income rather than by individual. A policy would have to be created that requires this question on the census be changed to find the pay rate of both the husband and the wife. This would finally give parliament the information they need on how to best rectify this problem. |
The Issue Regarding Child Mortality
A look at Suriname's child mortality rate of children under five will show you that Suriname has neither decreased nor increased in child mortality since the 1990's keeping around 2.4 %. Compared to the United States 0.7%, this is relatively high. Though there are many factors that contribute to this number the greatest and most prevalent is the fact that child health facilities are not found in Suriname's remote locations. It is the death of children in these locations that give Suriname its child mortality rate. Women in these remote locations have to give birth in unclean environments, and if there are any complications with the child birth then it is unlikely that the child will live. The Solution What simply needs to happen is that mothers need to have access to a facility that are a sterile environment with proper equipment and trained staff. Either these facilities need to be brought to those locations of need, or the people of those locations need to be brought to them. Both of these solutions have there problems in both practicality and cost effectiveness. Although, having a little of both seems very practical. Small simple facilities can be brought to key location and transportation can be improved to these areas. Many of these deaths can be prevented very easily. A facility doesn't need to have expensive equipment or a large staff to be effective in these remote locations. A cheap facility with the proper necessary equipment and a few trained workers could prove to be a huge help in these places. As for transportation railroads, bus systems, or even improved roads would increase access to these facilities tremendously. It might seem like too much to tackle a problem in its entirety, but if Suriname could improve it slightly, then that country would find a major increase in the quality of child health. |
